Need to raise funds to go to your affiliate's conference this year? The jammers from Waterbury, Connecticut did. For year these young people have been making a difference in their community. Whether it was through educating their peers about the frustrations and struggles of the poor through a Poverty Simulation, or raising awareness in their neighborhoods about violence against women through their Clothesline Project, they have been active in the Global Call to Action.
Two weekends ago they decided to begin fundraising to send themselves to the 2013 PeaceJam New England Spring Conference with Nobel Laureate Jody Williams!
They organized themselves and in just 9 hours over one weekend they had raised $900 toward their registration fees! That is $100 an hour folks!
How did they do that?! you might ask, well let me tell you how.
They organized a "can shake."
Have you ever visited a grocery store or shopping plaza and seen the girl scouts or salvation army posted outside with a donations can? well, that is what this enterprising group of youth did, and they walked away with enough money send several jammers from their group to the conference!
You can do this too! Just contact the appropriate representative from a supermarket, shopping plaza, or even busy gas station, and bring your group out with some signs and a positive and energized attitude, and you can could raise enough money to send your group to meet a Nobel Peace Prize winner this year!
Way to go Waterbury PeaceJammers! Can't wait to see you all at the Conference in a month!
