The Mid-South Affiliate -- a partnership between Belmont University and STARS Nashville - is preparing for their first PeaceJam Conference this weekend!

Written by Roger Dinwiddie, CEO of STARS

Meeting a Nobel Prize laureate sounds impossible. But at the PeaceJam Youth Leadership Conference at Belmont University on Jan. 26 and 27, students across the Midsouth will see that impossible dream come true as they spend a weekend working on a global cause with Shirin Ebadi.

Ebadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003 for her work to protect women’s and children’s rights in Iran and the Middle East. She was the first female judge in Iran at the age of 24 and, despite death threats and imprisonment, continued to work tirelessly on these efforts. She was forced to leave the country in 2009 and has been unable to return home to see her husband. Read more of her heroic peace efforts at www.peacejam.org.

What this means for the Nashville-area community is that young people will learn from an inspiring global leader that they have the power to change their world on a local and international level.

Adult advisers will explore issues of peace, violence, social oppression and injustice with the students to determine what they are passionate about, with the goal of brainstorming ideas for a peace project. It could take on the form of anything from bullying prevention to building wells in Africa. Ebadi will work with the students to determine one central project.
