PORTAGE, MI – The cultures of several nations will be seen and explored at the first Portage Northern Multi-Cultural Fair from 4-6 p.m. Saturday in the high school’s Commons.
Sponsored by the school’s Peace Jam Club, the free multi-cultural event will feature at least eight countries with displays, dances, traditions and foods from around the world. Guests from Western Michigan University, Portage Northern and the Portage community will be taking part.

Nancy Nott, Portage Northern language arts teacher and adviser to the Peace Jam Club, said the first multi-cultural event is all about promoting awareness of different cultures, races and customs.

“Peace Jam International has 10 global call to action initiatives to look at, and one of them is to increase awareness of differences and to reduce stereotypes, racism and judgments,” Nott said. “By increasing cultural awareness they hope to decrease negative connotations of the unknown.”

Portage Public Schools Peace Jam Club at Portage Northern has about 15 members who actively take part in the various activities of the international organization founded on the premise that Nobel Peace Prize winners can serve as inspirations for youth. Students work together to learn about a Nobel laureate and do projects, such as Northern’s first Multi-Cultural Fair, which the students are calling a “Multi-Culti Fair.”

“The fair is 100 percent student organized,” Nott said. “The students are very organized and very excited.”

The fair is open to everyone. Northern High is located at 1000 Idaho Ave.
