Class of 2012: Instead of college, Sarah Bertman of Kalamazoo is headed to Nicaragua
KALAMAZOO, MI -- Academically, Sarah Bertman appears plenty ready for college: Her acceptance letter to University of Michigan is evidence of that.
But college-ready mentally and emotionally? Not so much, she says.
Which is why Sarah, who is about to graduate from Kalamazoo Central High School, is taking some time off. Instead of heading to college in the fall, she's participating in a service-learning program through Amigos de las Americas, in which Sarah will spend eight months living in Nicaragua where she will live with a family and work at a local nonprofit agency.
